High-dose chemotherapy remains a critical approach in treating breast cancer, with doxorubicin (DOX) being a widely used agent. However, the dose-dependent cardiotoxicity associated with DOX limits its application. Recent studies suggest that cannabidiol (CBD) might offer a solution by enhancing antitumoral effects while providing cardioprotective benefits.
The study involved a breast cancer model in mice, where 4T1 cell lines were injected to simulate cancer. Groups were varied by treatment methods, primarily focused on the integrative effects of CBD and DOX.
Five groups were part of the study:
Significant reductions were observed in tumor size and weight, particularly in groups receiving both CBD and DOX.
The TUNEL test confirmed increased apoptosis of tumor cells in both pretreatment and concurrent CBD+DOX groups, showcasing its potential efficacy.
Histopathological analyses revealed no congestive or inflammatory signs in cardiac tissue, and a lack of metastasis in the lungs of the CBD+DOX treated mice.
This research suggests a promising future in integrating CBD with traditional chemotherapy treatments. By potentially mitigating DOX cardiotoxicity, CBD could enhance patient quality of life and treatment outcomes.

While CBD shows promise in enhancing chemotherapy efficacy and protecting against cardiotoxicity, its application alone may not be devoid of risks. Ongoing research is necessary to optimize doses and schedules to harness its full therapeutic potential in breast cancer treatment.
